Instant Book, Start to Finish

How a host says yes once and never approves a booking again, what the guest sees, what happens when a booking doesn't fit, and the side door for custom prices. Twenty-four dated images: live captures, host screens, and Airbnb's own pages.

Sources are Airbnb's own Help Center, Resource Center and Newsroom, with Wayback captures for history. Guest screens were captured live today, logged out, nothing booked. Host screens come from Airbnb's release images and two host blogs, labeled.

The host says yes to a rule set, not to a person

Step 1

New hosts approve their first 5 bookings, then get switched

A new host can choose to review requests by hand while they find their feet. After 5 confirmed reservations the setting flips to Instant Book on its own. Some hosts are in a test where the number is 3. They can switch back any time.

For usA default that flips after a track record. We'd ask instead of flip: creators are wary, and trust broke wherever a platform switched a new use on by default.

Step 2

Optionally, an experienced first guest

During setup a host can let anyone book, or only an experienced guest for the very first stay: 3 or more completed stays, verified ID, payment on file, a good record. After that guest checks out, the listing opens to everyone automatically.

For usA training-wheels condition that expires by itself. Our version is the opt-in after her first yes.

Step 3

The setting: Use Instant Book or Approve all bookings

Listings, then the listing editor, then Booking settings. Two cards, not a switch. Under Use Instant Book sit the only two guest requirements left: a good track record, and a pre-booking message the guest must answer. The card itself says Instant Book can bring more bookings.

  • Government ID and "recommended by other hosts" were removed as host options between 2022 and 2023.
  • Every guest also meets Airbnb's own requirements and agrees to the house rules.

For usTwo cards beat a toggle: both choices are legitimate. Few conditions, all checkable, none about who the person is.

Step 4

Calendar rules still gate it

  • Advance notice: same day, or 1, 2, 3 or 7 days. A switch can let shorter notice come in as requests.
  • Preparation time blocks days between stays.
  • Trip length: guests can only instant book under 31 nights.
  • Late arrival within 48 hours, outside check-in hours, becomes a request.

What doesn't fit isn't refused. It falls back to a request.

For usNo end date is our 31-night rule: outside the standing yes, so it comes to her.

Airbnb pays the yes back in demand

Step 5

Ranking, a filter, and an exemption

Airbnb's help says listings that can be booked instantly may rank higher. For request-only listings the algorithm weighs how fast hosts answer and how often they decline. Instant listings are exempt from all of that. Guests can filter for Instant Book, and it counts toward the response rate Superhost needs.

For usThe reward costs Airbnb nothing. Ours could be "matched first" once it's true. Never a penalty for asking.

Step 6

How it used to be sold

The retired host page promised more earnings, a search boost, "exclusive control" and peace of mind: cancel penalty-free if a guest breaks the rules. Its headline: business is better with Instant Book. The page now redirects to the help article.

In 2017, 60% of bookings and 70% of new listings used Instant Book. Airbnb's last word, in Dec 2022, was "a majority" of reservations.

Step 7

Search: a chip and a lightning bolt

The quick filter bar has an Instant Book chip. Inside Filters, Booking options shows Instant Book with the lightning icon. In today's logged-out capture the bolt does not appear on listing cards or map pins.

Step 8

The listing: one Reserve button for everyone

An instantly bookable listing and a request-only one show the same card: price, dates, guests, "$0 today", Reserve, and "You won't be charged yet". Airbnb's page data marks one instant and one not; the guest can't tell.

For usAirbnb hides the difference until the last step. A brand should learn early instead: the green line in the extend sheet says she'll say yes right away.

Step 9

Checkout tells the truth

After Reserve, an instant listing opens Confirm and pay. A request-only one opens Request to book. Airbnb's help says exactly that: the title tells you whether you're booking or asking. Pay, and an instant booking is done.

Step 10

Told after, with a prompt to say hello

No accept step. The host gets a notification and the reservation lands on the Today tab: arrives in N days, the group, dates, earnings, and a "Say hello to your guests" prompt. Guest photos stay hidden until a booking is confirmed.

For usOur receipt: told after, what was bought, until when, the money. No photo question, since the brand is known.

Step 11

Extensions confirm instantly too

Since mid 2026, an Instant Book guest can add nights with instant confirmation if they ask at least 72 hours before checkout. The host is just notified.

For usThe closest analog in the whole flow. A rights offer is an extension of something the brand already holds, and extensions are where Airbnb made instant the rule.

The escape hatch, then and now

Step 12

2019: always, up to 3 a year online

A host who was uncomfortable with an Instant Book reservation could always cancel without penalty: Your Reservations, Change or Cancel, pick the reason. Three a year online, then by phone. That cap shows in captures until Jul 2022 and is gone by Nov 2022.

help 2022 via Wayback, Mar 2019
Archived Airbnb help: penalty-free cancellation, 3 times per year
Archived help · 2019 · old rule "Limits": 3 online cancellations a year.
Step 13

2026: named reasons only, and a warning

Today Instant Book hosts can cancel without consequences for a short list of extra reasons: the guest signals they'll break a house rule, or has several bad reviews or a thin profile. No yearly number. Hosts who cancel a lot may have to turn Instant Book off.

Without a valid reason the normal host policy applies: 10% to 50% of the reservation, $50 minimum, no payout, possible Superhost loss.

For usThe hatch was a launch subsidy for trust, narrowed once instant was normal. A creator version is open: the prototype offers a line to Katie's team, not an undo.

Without Instant Book: a request and a 24 hour clock

Step 14

The guest sends a request

Reserve, then Request to book, payment, an optional message, submit. The guest isn't charged until the host accepts. The dates are blocked on the host's calendar while the request is pending.

help 85, 28

Live · Oct 20 2026 Request to book.
Step 15

The host has 24 hours

Accept and the guest is charged and the booking confirms. Decline in time and nothing counts against the host, though frequent declines can hurt placement. Let it expire and it counts as no response, which lowers the response rate. Since May 2026 the request card on the Today tab shows earnings, the guest's rating, Accept and Decline, and a 24 hour countdown.

Airbnb says most hosts answer within 12 hours.

For usOur offer screen, with 48 hours: creators aren't running a hosting business, and 48 is the answer window in our Aug 4 creator campaigns prototype. Silence means no, never yes.

A custom price: pre-approve or special offer

Step 16

An inquiry is just a message

A guest who writes first sends an inquiry, not a booking. The host has 24 hours to respond for their response rate. Replying, pre-approving, sending a special offer or declining all count.

Pre-approve lets that guest book those dates at the listed price without another approval, for 24 hours. The calendar stays open meanwhile.

The special offer commits the host up front

The host sets the listing, dates, guests and one subtotal, and sends. The guest has 24 hours. If they accept, the booking confirms automatically. Several offers can be out for the same dates; the first to accept wins.

For usAsk for more, mirrored: the creator names a price, and the brand's Accept confirms it. Agreed on the brand side Oct 6.

What it adds up to

Ten moves behind Instant Book

1

Consent once, as a setting

The host says yes to a rule set. Every matching booking is pre-accepted.

2

Conditions replace judgment

A handful of checkable gates. Whatever they can't express goes to the manual path.

3

A fallback, not a wall

Miss a condition and you get a request with a clock, not a refusal.

4

An escape hatch buys trust

Generous at launch, narrowed once instant was normal.

5

The manual path is measured

Timers, response rate, decline counts. Instant hosts are exempt.

6

Paid back in demand

A filter, a lightning bolt, a ranking edge. Costs Airbnb nothing.

7

Defaults do the selling

Five manual approvals, then switched automatically, with a way back.

8

The requester learns late

One Reserve button everywhere; only the checkout title differs.

9

Negotiation is a bounded side door

Special offers run on the same 24 hours, and acceptance confirms.

10

Fairness as a reason

Airbnb widened Instant Book in 2022 to cut bias; hosts can't screen individuals.

How each move carries over to a creator's yes, and which ones don't: Airbnb to Benable, in the study.
